View a slideshow of photos of Dorian Gray Parrot here.  Read an article about him here.

Dory is a timneh African gray parrot, smaller than the better known Congo African gray, but his personality and his vocabulary are just as big.

Lobelia and Saw Palmetto: Two Helpful Herbs... or maybe not?

Lobelia or "pukeweed" has a background as a medicinal herb. In some doses, however, it can be fatal, and even a very small piece (which I chewed to prepare this article) has a memorably awful taste. It was one of the herbs Native Americans used to purify themselves by making themselves vomit. Nowadays dismissed as a weed, it was a traditional favorite in English country gardens.  Read more...

Saw palmetto is an herbal remedy used for generations not only as an aphrodisiac but also to treat symptoms of urinary tract and testicular infection, coughs and respiratory congestion. Although there are unsupported reports that it helps with metabolism, digestion, appetite and sexual dysfunction, it is best known for treating enlarged prostate (benign prostate hyperplasia or BPH), which across their lifetimes affects about half of all men, who dread its symptoms of painful urination. Prescribed for women and men for various symptoms, in herbal tradition and modern medicine it is an asset for men's health.  Read more...

Keira Knightley's Anti-Domestic Violence Advertisement is Too Violent for TV

British broadcasters and domestic violence activists are squaring off over a shocking public service advertisement featuring actress Keira Knightley of Bend It Like Beckham and the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. "CUT - the movie," directed by Joe Wright (more - he and Knightley worked together on such films as Atonement), show Keira Knightley as she is brutally assaulted by a man who appears to be her boyfriend or husband, after she returns home from a day at work on a movie set.

    Happy 100th Birthday, Olivier Messiaen!

Olivier Messiaen (December 10, 1908 - April 27, 1992) was a French composer, teacher, organist, and ornithologist (a student of birds). He created some of the most memorable music of the twentieth century, drawing on influences as varied as his intense Roman Catholic faith, his studies in music from around the world, his interest in electronic instruments, and his love of the songs of birds.

Use the Subjunctive Verb to Write Precisely and Elegantly

In 1964, Tevye, an impoverished milkman, first charmed Fiddler on the Roof audiences with his plaintive, "If I Were a Rich Man." Some four decades later, Gwen Stefani sang an updated version, "If I Was a Rich Girl." Now, let's drop the last word in each title. Who is right?

Natural Medicine - Not Naturally Safe

Many people believe that natural medicine is naturally good and often it is. But just because something is natural does not mean that it is safe. After all, tobacco is natural, and so is rattlesnake venom.

    Alzheimer's Disease: The Family Curse

Alzheimer's disease leads to a loss of mental ability severe enough to interfere with normal living and scars people's experience of their whole lives. The decrease in memory robs them of their past, the loss of ability to reason robs them of their present, and the inability to plan takes away what future the  disease leaves them.

Barack Obama: A Sinister Candidate for President

This year, the Democratic Party has selected a truly sinister candidate, Barack Obama, a sinister and outright gauche candidate....  It should be noted that he follows such sinister presidents (from both parties) as Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan, George Bush (the First), and Bill Clinton... and to go back a little further, Harry Truman, Herbert Hoover, and James Garfield.

Among new laws going into effect in Florida on July 1, 2008 is a ban on the sale of a hallucinogenic drug Salvia divinorum. The state legislature passed a bill making possession of Salvia a third-degree felony, with a punishment of up to five years in jail and a fine of $5,000.

Sam's Club's Square Milk Bottles: Green or Just Messy?

If, like me, you shop at Sam's Club (part of Wal-Mart Stores), you may have a messy kitchen these days. The reason is that Sam's Club is now selling milk and orange juice in square bottles without spouts that are really hard to pour from.

Why Are Bands Giving Away Free Music on the Internet?

I realize how old I am, when I find that on the Internet, I can legally download free tracks from Nine Inch Nails from the NIN website. Why is Trent Reznor making his music free to anyone with Internet access? When I was a teenager, I had to save money to buy a not so compact disk. There was no free lunch or free music. Now, there is a new music economy.

    I've Been Interviewed!

What was your first job? How old were you? Did you like it or hate it?

My first job was working on Saturdays at a drug store when I was about thirteen or fourteen. I pretty much enjoyed it. I remember as it got later in the evening, young men would come in asking for bizarre things, such as "Kaywoodies" and "Moon Bloomers," both of which meant condoms. I'm still trying to work that into a story.
